Syntax Query

- Natural Language
A natural language query can be made up of a single word, a list of words, or a natural language question. For example, the query: "Singapore" will list all documents containing the word "Singapore".

However, the query: "where can I locate the Singapore River?" will list documents on locating the Singapore River first followed by all other documents on Singapore and river.

- Phrase Searching
By keying in words within double quotes, documents containing those words in that specific order will be displayed. For example, the query: "Singapore Chinese" only lists documents with the phrase "Singapore Chinese". Documents with "Singapore" and "Chinese" that are apart will not be shown.

- Fielded Search
In the Advanced Search page, a search can be restricted to documents containing a specific word or phrase in a particular field. For example, entering the query "Chinese Dialect Groups" in the Project Title field, will retrieve records from this title.

- Boolean Operators: and (&&); or (||); not
The Boolean operators, and, or and not, are used to narrow or expand a search.
Note: Boolean operators must be entered in LOWERCASE letters.

- and (&&)
The and operator is useful in restricting a search. For instance, when searching for documents containing information on Chinatown, a query such as "Singapore and Chinese" only finds those documents containing both the words "Singapore" and "Chinese". An alternative syntax for this query is "Singapore && Chinese".

- or (||)
The or operator joins two different phrases of a Boolean search together for example "Singapore or Chinese" finds all documents containing either the word "Singapore" or "Chinese" (or both). An alternative syntax for this query is "Singapore || Chinese".

- not
The not operator is used to reject documents that contains the specified word. The query "Singapore not Chinese" lists all documents with the word "Singapore", but without the word "Chinese".

- (...)
The ( ) operator is useful in narrowing a search. For example. "(Singapore or China) and Chinese" finds all documents containing either the word "Singapore Chinese" or "China Chinese" or both.
